Newmarket was settled along the banks of the Lamprey River and Great Bay to take advantage of the excellent water power and proximity to a trade route out to the Piscataqua River and beyond. It began as a mill town producing lumber and textiles, and has continued to grow and evolve into a small town with many local businesses and high tech companies. It still has its small mill town feel, but with many of the advantages of being adjacent to a college town and all of the resources found on campus.
